Why TheCoolList?
Why a couple sold their New Zealand home to travel full-time and uncover the world's coolest places.
We built the guide we always wished existed.
Every trip leaves you with a handful of places you'll never forget. The bakery in Mexico City that has you setting an alarm just to beat the morning queue. The little bar a local insists you visit, that you'd never have found on your own. The boutique hotel where every little detail feels thoughtfully considered. The family-run restaurant you'd happily plan another trip around. Those are the places that stay with you.
As our own list of recommendations grew, we realised we weren't looking for the biggest travel guide—we were building the one we always wished we'd had ourselves.
A place that celebrates quality over quantity. A guide that's carefully curated rather than endlessly catalogued. Somewhere to discover places we'd confidently recommend to our closest friends. That's why The Cool List exists.
So, who are we?
We're Jason and Louise and our story has taken us from the UK to Asia, and eventually to New Zealand. Along the way we've developed a habit of judging a city less by its landmarks than by its neighbourhood bakeries, late-night bars and the places locals quietly recommend to one another.
Looking back, we've spent much of our lives seeking out great food, beautiful places and memorable experiences. In 2027, we decided to take that a step further, selling our home and setting off to travel full-time.
Not to rush through as many countries as possible, but to slow down. To spend weeks—sometimes months—getting to know a place. Wandering neighbourhoods with no plan. Returning to the same café often enough that the staff recognise you. Asking locals where they go when they have a free evening.
That's where the best recommendations usually come from.
You simply know when a place deserves to be shared.
Sometimes it's the food. Sometimes it's the people, the atmosphere or the story behind it. More often than not, it's impossible to explain with just one reason.
