Carmel
Carmel Israeli Street Food delivers the authentic tastes of Israel to the inhabitants of New Zealand's largest city, Auckland . Established in 2017 by the Kiwi-born Carmel Davidovitch and her partner Tomer, Carmel has quickly evolved from a beloved food truck into a cherished brick-and-mortar location in Eden Terrace.
At Carmel, the experience is as much about the atmosphere as it is about the food. The vibrant blue shopfront welcomes guests into a world where every dish tells a story of heritage, passion, and the joy of sharing. Co-owner Tomer, often found at the counter, embodies the spirit of hospitality that defines Carmel, greeting customers with a smile and an aromatic sample of freshly-made falafel.
The inspiration behind Carmel is deeply personal. Carmel Davidovitch's upbringing in a family with a rich culinary heritage, spanning from North African to Eastern European and Kiwi traditions, instills in the cafe's offerings a unique blend of flavours and techniques. The philosophy is simple yet profound: food as an expression of love, a way to bring people together.
The menu at Carmel is a testament to this ethos, with seasonal changes ensuring freshness and variety. Yet, staples like the cloud-soft pita, rich hummus, crispy falafel, and an array of pickles remain constant, inviting diners to embark on a taste journey like no other. Notably, the cafe's embrace of sweets and coffee alongside traditional Israeli street food marks it as distinctively Kiwi-Israeli, catering to the local palate with an international twist.
Carmel's success is built on more than just its food; it's the sense of community and connection that resonates with every visitor. From regulars to newcomers, the cafe has become a gathering place for all - a testament to the universal language of good food and warm hospitality - every time we visit, we're treated to an extra falafel and drizzles of spicy mango sauce.
The journey of Carmel, from its food truck origins to a beloved Eden Terrace staple, reflects the resilience and creativity of its founders. Despite the challenges posed by lockdowns and the pandemic, Carmel has flourished, becoming a social media sensation known for making some of Auckland's best bread and offering a taste of home to many.
Carmel Israeli Street Food is not just a cafe; it's a destination. It's where the flavours of Israel meet the Kiwi way of life, creating a unique dining experience that's both comforting and exciting.
The only thing we'd change about Carmel if we could are the opening times, sadly they're only open Thursday–Saturday. Just keeps us hungry for more.
