Eames House

Charles and Ray Eames did not leave behind a show home. They left a working, lived-in design laboratory: the home and studio they moved into on December 24, 1949, and occupied for the rest of their lives. Case Study House No. 8 still holds the force of that daily use, with the preserved interiors and original Eames collection making their ideas feel close rather than abstract.

The most rewarding way in is a guided private interior tour, by reservation, where the house can be read through its furniture, objects and experiments rather than as a sealed Modernist icon. Exterior self-guided visits, public open days and occasional workshops offer other ways to engage with the site without entering the residence.

Designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark on September 20, 2006, the Eames House remains one of the most intact and influential examples of post-war Modern residential architecture. Its care is unusually serious too: the Charles & Ray Eames Foundation and Getty Conservation Institute maintain a formal conservation plan for the structure, landscape and collections.
