TCL Chinese Theatre

Nearly 200 celebrity handprints, footprints and autographs are set into the Forecourt of the Stars, turning the pavement outside TCL Chinese Theatre into one of Hollywood’s most tangible film archives. You can stand beside the marks left here since the theatre opened in 1927, comparing shoe sizes, signatures and the slightly odd intimacy of famous hands pressed into wet cement.

The best details are the playful ones. Harold Lloyd’s eyeglasses are there, Betty Grable’s leg, the Harry Potter trio’s wands and even Herbie the Volkswagen’s tire prints. They stop the forecourt feeling like a roll call and make it more like a collection of private jokes preserved in public.

The setting matters. Opened as Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, it remains Hollywood’s iconic movie palace, with original decorative design and imported Chinese artefacts giving the courtyard its theatrical frame. A 30-minute guided tour adds the premiere history, architecture and stories behind the imprints; inside, the modern IMAX auditorium keeps it tied to cinema now.
