Casa Pedregal
Last updated September 29, 2026
Volcanic rock is not a backdrop at Casa Pedregal; it is part of the architecture. Luis Barragán carved the house into Mexico City’s Pedregal lava field, folding boulders and rough black stone into the property’s composition and landscape rather than clearing them away.
Historically known as Casa Prieto López, the house was designed and built by Barragán between 1947 and 1951 in Jardines del Pedregal. It remains one of the rare Barragán houses you can experience through guided visits, with the restoration led by collector César Cervantes Tezcucano reactivating the site for public visits and cultural programming while preserving its spatial intent.
Stay for Tetetlán, which operates at Av. de las Fuentes 180-B within the Casa Pedregal complex as a restaurant, cultural centre and artist-residency programme. Set partly in the original service and stable areas, it serves seasonal, sustainability-focused food: house sourdough, sopecitos, and producer-led ingredients from places such as Texcoco and Xochimilco. Some experiences pair the architecture tour with mezcal or a multi-course meal.
