Bradbury Building

Look up from the ground-floor atrium and the Bradbury Building does exactly what it has been doing for more than a century: stops people mid-step. Five storeys rise under a vast skylight, with ornate Victorian wrought-iron walkways, marble staircases and hand-operated “birdcage” elevators layered into one extraordinary interior.

Completed in 1893, it is the oldest commercial building remaining in downtown Los Angeles, but it does not feel like a preserved relic. The pleasure is in the close-up details: the ironwork, much of it manufactured in France and reportedly shown at the Chicago World’s Fair before installation; the lift cages; the way daylight drops through the atrium and picks out the stairs and railings.

Its cinematic reputation is part of the texture rather than the whole story. The interior has appeared in over 100 films and TV productions, including Blade Runner, and standing beneath that skylight makes the attraction obvious without needing a camera.
