The Broad

General admission to The Broad is always free, which still feels slightly startling once you are inside its postwar and contemporary art collection. This is not a token free room: the collection numbers over 2,000 works, with deep holdings by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jeff Koons and Andy Warhol, among others.

Head up to the third-floor collection galleries, where rotating displays allow the museum to go deep rather than skim the surface. You might find focused groups of works by Warhol, Basquiat or Takashi Murakami, shown with enough space and concentration to reward a slower look.

The building helps set the tone before you enter: a white honeycomb “veil” on Grand Avenue, directly across from Walt Disney Concert Hall, designed to make the collection feel visible from the street. Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Mirrored Room—The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away (2013) is also on view, but it requires a separate timed-entry ticket for its one-minute mirrored encounter.
