Casa Gilardi

Luis Barragán’s last completed house saves its strongest gesture for the pool: a pink wall rising straight from the water, held beneath a skylight that changes the room as the light shifts.
Completed in 1976 as Barragán’s final formal project, Casa Gilardi is less a house to wander than a sequence to be led through. The guided visit centres on that pool–dining-room composition, with its water mirror beside a red wall, but the approach matters too: a yellow-lit corridor concentrates your attention before the space opens out. In the central patio, the jacaranda tree that was already on the site remains in place, becoming the anchor around which the house is organised.
It is still a private residence, so visits feel controlled and close rather than museum-like. You need to reserve in advance through Casa Gilardi’s official website; guided tours run at set times Monday–Saturday, with admission of MXN 600 payable in cash.
